it’s all done with mirrors

17 10 2014

late afternoon in Harajuku, and the October sun is blasting down on the streets. with no clouds to diffuse the sun, the shadows are strong and dark but sometimes there’s a tiny ray of hope. mirrored glass in office buildings all over Tokyo catches those rays and returns them to sender. and coincidentally  spotlights a few points of the street. catching those spotlights is half the fun.

great light is where you find it

Ko in Tamachi

the other day I spent 8 hours in Tamachi, where I was engaged to photograph a workshop dealing with improving your TOEIC score (Test of English for International Communication). The event was held in a giant glass fronted office building, and afterwards I went out into the huge lobby, and noticed the amazing light. Floor to ceiling glass on two sides, and highly polished black marble on the other two. So I grabbed Ko, who was assisting at the event, and we shot a few photos, one of which you can see above. All natural light, around 5pm.

…it was a little bit on the wet side. I had a JJC lens raincover in my bag though, first time to use it, and it did the job admirably. Even rotating the lens through 90 degrees for horizontal or landscape shots, as the cover attaches to the lens hood, didn’t make any problem.

3Tides Tattoo, Harajuku

one thing you might decide to pick up while in Japan is a tattoo. I went with my friend Jessica #shethatisnau on Twitter – to the Harajuku branch of 3Tides. she’s an illustrator and had co-authored a design drawing heavily on Lovecraft and the ukiyo-e style

or so it might seem. the decidedly strange architecture of the Big Sight exhibition halls, coupled with the monorail of the Yurikamome Line, pretty much encapsulates Tokyo for a great number of visitors. an estimated 36000 poured through the doors this week, to visit the Smart Energy Expo. wind, solar, fuel cell and battery technologies were all represented.

solar panels aren't fantastically exciting but at least they have a reflective property

at least I know that the exhibitors share my unenthusiasm for black panel displays….they had this soccer guy liven up their display

tie up your wife, Sir?

A booth at Design Festa, offers a quick demonstration of shibari. A lady dressed in latex and not much else, will truss up willing volunteers. There was a long queue for participation.
